BEAUTY

1

Beauty is not
that soft, flawless face
with a smooth but rigid
foundation.
It is not
a make-up of well-ground dust
stamped on a silky, melanous skin.
It is not
that reflexive second glance
you throw at that crush of yours.
It is not
that tasteful dish of jollof rice
you munch to appease your fleshy
gods.
Beauty is actually
what you see
when you do not look.
It is
all you have left
when nothing seems right.
It is that smile
your innocent cheeks cook up
amidst shrilling heartbreaks.
It is good and evil;
light and darkness
all wrapped up in one tiny box.
It is that lullaby
your willing spirit composes
to serenade the fatigued body.
Beauty is just what you are
when your sole companion
is that image in the mirror.
